He began his career as a Head of the Physical Testing Laboratory at a JSE listed aluminium company based in Pietermaritzburg and held this position for almost a year before moving to the operations side of the business as a process engineer. In this position, he was responsible for process engineering at the hot rolling division and later of the hot and cold rolling division. He held this position for 4 years and in addition, later managed the operations of this division for a period of 4 years. In 2010, he moved to the finishing division of the company to manage the operations of the company’s biggest division. He has managed this area for more than 9 years. Dr Lehlohonolo Makhanya is a metallurgical engineer by profession and has a PhD in strategic management from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). He has a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (MTech in Mech Eng) from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), a Master’s degree in Business Leadership (MBL) from University of South Africa (UNISA), a Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDiP) from University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), and a National Higher Diploma in Metallurgical Engineering from University of Johannesburg (UJ).
He is a self-motivated, energetic and adaptable professional with a practical approach to problem solving and a drive to see things through to completion. He enjoys overcoming challenges and has a genuine interest in business leadership and making organisations successful.
